Keynote Speakers

While Dr. Metz is formally retired, he is still active in the climate policy arena, including his role as a Fellow at the European Climate Foundation. He is the former co-chairman of the Climate Change Mitigation Working Group of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2008 (the IPCC received the Nobel Peace Prize for its work in 2007).

He also was climate change coordinator of the Ministry of Environment of the Netherlands and chief negotiator for the Netherlands and the European Union on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as head of the Global Sustainability and Climate Change Division of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

Bert holds a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Biotechnology from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. In 2010, he published his book, Controlling Climate Change.

Prof. Johan Bouma

Soil Scientist

Johan Bouma is a pioneer in soil science. He is a world leader in applying soil survey information to realize sustainable land management. In his career he studied the functional characterisation of soils, combining pedological and soil-physical expertise in a socio-economic context. He has focused on crop production, waste disposal, and water availability, while also addressing policy issues.

He was a member of the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy, a think-tank in the Dutch prime minister’s office. He in honorary member of the International Union of Soil Sciences, and received the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Medal from the European Geosciences Union and is Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Johan studied soil science at Wageningen University and Research Centre, obtaining his degree cum laude in 1966, and his PhD in soil management in 1969. He subsequently did research and taught at University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1975 he returned to the Netherlands, and thereon became affiliated to the Netherlands Soil Survey Institute and Wageningen University.
